BaseAgent Lifecycle Hooks
Overview
BaseAgent provides automatic lifecycle hooks that are called at specific points during agent execution. Subclasses override these methods to add custom behavior.
Hook Methods
1. Pre-Initialization Hook
Called before agent initialization begins.
protected async onPreInitialization?(): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Validate runtime environment
- Load configuration
- Set up external connections
Example:
protected async onPreInitialization(): Promise<void> {
// Validate environment variables
if (!process.env.NODE_ENV) {
throw new Error('NODE_ENV not set');
}
// Load configuration
this.config = await this.loadConfig();
this.logger.info('Pre-initialization complete');
}
2. Post-Initialization Hook
Called after agent initialization completes.
protected async onPostInitialization?(): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Verify initialization success
- Register with fleet
- Start background tasks
Example:
protected async onPostInitialization(): Promise<void> {
// Register with fleet
await this.registerWithFleet();
// Start health check
this.startHealthCheck();
this.logger.info('Agent initialized and ready');
}
3. Pre-Task Hook
Called before task execution begins.
protected async onPreTask?(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment }): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Verify task requirements
- Load context from memory
- Set up resources
Example:
protected async onPreTask(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment }): Promise<void> {
// Load context from memory
const context = await this.memoryStore.retrieve('fleet/context', {
partition: 'coordination'
});
// Verify task can be executed
if (!this.hasCapability(data.assignment.task.type)) {
throw new Error(`Missing capability: ${data.assignment.task.type}`);
}
// Store task start in memory
await this.memoryStore.store(`tasks/${data.assignment.id}/start`, {
timestamp: Date.now(),
agentId: this.agentId.id
}, {
partition: 'task_history',
ttl: 86400 // 24 hours
});
this.logger.info('Pre-task hook complete', { taskId: data.assignment.id });
}
4. Post-Task Hook
Called after task execution completes successfully.
protected async onPostTask?(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment; result: any }): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Validate task results
- Store results in memory
- Emit completion events
Example:
protected async onPostTask(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment; result: any }): Promise<void> {
// Store results in memory
await this.memoryStore.store(`tasks/${data.assignment.id}/result`, {
result: data.result,
timestamp: Date.now(),
agentId: this.agentId.id
}, {
partition: 'task_results',
ttl: 86400 // 24 hours
});
// Emit completion event
this.eventBus.emit('task:completed', {
taskId: data.assignment.id,
agentId: this.agentId.id,
result: data.result
});
// Update performance metrics
await this.memoryStore.storePerformanceMetric({
metric: 'tasks_completed',
value: 1,
unit: 'count',
agentId: this.agentId.id
});
this.logger.info('Post-task hook complete', { taskId: data.assignment.id });
}
5. Task Error Hook
Called when task execution fails.
protected async onTaskError?(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment; error: Error }): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Log error details
- Store error for analysis
- Attempt recovery
Example:
protected async onTaskError(data: { assignment: TaskAssignment; error: Error }): Promise<void> {
// Store error in memory
await this.memoryStore.store(`errors/${data.assignment.id}`, {
error: data.error.message,
stack: data.error.stack,
timestamp: Date.now(),
agentId: this.agentId.id
}, {
partition: 'errors',
ttl: 604800 // 7 days
});
// Emit error event
this.eventBus.emit('task:failed', {
taskId: data.assignment.id,
agentId: this.agentId.id,
error: data.error
});
// Update error metrics
await this.memoryStore.storePerformanceMetric({
metric: 'task_errors',
value: 1,
unit: 'count',
agentId: this.agentId.id
});
this.logger.error('Task execution failed', {
taskId: data.assignment.id,
error: data.error
});
}
6. Pre-Termination Hook
Called before agent termination begins.
protected async onPreTermination?(): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Save state
- Close connections
- Notify fleet
Example:
protected async onPreTermination(): Promise<void> {
// Notify fleet
this.eventBus.emit('agent:terminating', {
agentId: this.agentId
});
// Save state
await this.saveState();
// Close external connections
await this.closeConnections();
this.logger.info('Pre-termination hook complete');
}
7. Post-Termination Hook
Called after agent termination completes.
protected async onPostTermination?(): Promise<void>;
Use Cases:
- Final cleanup
- Export metrics
- Archive logs
Example:
protected async onPostTermination(): Promise<void> {
// Export final metrics
await this.exportMetrics();
// Archive logs
await this.archiveLogs();
this.logger.info('Agent terminated successfully');
}

EventBus Integration
Overview
EventBus provides event-driven communication between agents using Node's EventEmitter.
Emit Events
protected emitEvent(
type: string,
data: any,
priority?: 'low' | 'medium' | 'high' | 'critical'
): void
Example:
// Emit test completion event
this.emitEvent('test:completed', {
agentId: this.agentId,
tests: 25,
coverage: 95
}, 'high');
Register Event Handlers
protected registerEventHandler<T = any>(handler: EventHandler<T>): void
Example:
// Listen for test completion events
this.registerEventHandler({
eventType: 'test:completed',
handler: async (event: QEEvent) => {
console.log('Test completed:', event.data);
// Update coverage analysis
await this.analyzeCoverage(event.data);
}
});
Broadcast Messages
protected async broadcastMessage(type: string, payload: any): Promise<void>

Best Practices
1. Always Use Lifecycle Hooks
// ✅ GOOD: Override lifecycle hooks
class MyAgent extends BaseAgent {
protected async onPreTask(data: any): Promise<void> {
await this.verifyResources();
}
protected async onPostTask(data: any): Promise<void> {
await this.storeResults(data.result);
}
}
// ❌ BAD: Manual hook management
class MyAgent extends BaseAgent {
async executeTask(assignment: TaskAssignment) {
// Manual pre-task logic (error-prone)
await this.verifyResources();
const result = await this.performTask(assignment.task);
await this.storeResults(result);
return result;
}
}
2. Use VerificationHookManager for Complex Validation
// ✅ GOOD: Use VerificationHookManager
protected async onPreTask(data: any): Promise<void> {
const hookManager = new VerificationHookManager(this.memoryStore);
const verification = await hookManager.executePreTaskVerification({
task: data.assignment.task.type,
context: {
requiredVars: ['NODE_ENV'],
minMemoryMB: 512,
requiredModules: ['jest']
}
});
if (!verification.passed) {
throw new Error('Verification failed');
}
}
// ❌ BAD: Manual verification
protected async onPreTask(data: any): Promise<void> {
if (!process.env.NODE_ENV) {
throw new Error('NODE_ENV not set');
}
// ... more manual checks
}
3. Store Results in Memory with Appropriate TTLs
// ✅ GOOD: Use partitions and TTLs
await this.memoryStore.store('test-results', results, {
partition: 'test_results',
ttl: 86400, // 24 hours
accessLevel: AccessLevel.SWARM
});
// ❌ BAD: Default partition, no TTL
await this.memoryStore.store('test-results', results);
4. Use EventBus for Coordination
// ✅ GOOD: Event-driven coordination
this.eventBus.emit('test:completed', {
agentId: this.agentId,
coverage: 95
});
// Register handler
this.registerEventHandler({
eventType: 'test:completed',
handler: async (event) => {
await this.analyzeCoverage(event.data);
}
});
// ❌ BAD: Polling memory
setInterval(async () => {
const results = await this.memoryStore.retrieve('test-results');
if (results) {
await this.analyzeCoverage(results);
}
}, 1000);
5. Handle Errors in onTaskError
// ✅ GOOD: Comprehensive error handling
protected async onTaskError(data: any): Promise<void> {
// Store error
await this.memoryStore.store(`errors/${data.assignment.id}`, {
error: data.error.message,
stack: data.error.stack
}, {
partition: 'errors',
ttl: 604800 // 7 days
});
// Emit error event
this.eventBus.emit('task:failed', {
agentId: this.agentId,
error: data.error
});
// Log error
this.logger.error('Task failed', { error: data.error });
}
// ❌ BAD: Silent failure
protected async onTaskError(data: any): Promise<void> {
console.error('Error:', data.error);
}
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
1. Hook Not Called
Problem: Lifecycle hook not executing.
Solution: Ensure hook method name is correct and uses optional ? syntax:
// ✅ CORRECT
protected async onPreTask?(data: any): Promise<void> { }
// ❌ INCORRECT (will not be called)
protected async preTask(data: any): Promise<void> { }
2. Memory Store Not Available
Problem: memoryStore is undefined in hook.
Solution: Ensure memoryStore is provided in BaseAgent config:
const agent = new MyAgent({
type: 'test-generator',
capabilities: [...],
context: {...},
memoryStore: swarmMemoryManager, // Required
eventBus: eventBus
});
3. Verification Always Fails
Problem: executePreTaskVerification always returns passed: false.
Solution: Check context requirements match system capabilities:
// ❌ Too strict
const verification = await hookManager.executePreTaskVerification({
task: 'test-generation',
context: {
minMemoryMB: 16000, // Too high
requiredVars: ['NONEXISTENT_VAR']
}
});
// ✅ Reasonable requirements
const verification = await hookManager.executePreTaskVerification({
task: 'test-generation',
context: {
minMemoryMB: 512,
requiredVars: ['NODE_ENV']
}
});
4. Events Not Received
Problem: Event handler never fires.
Solution: Ensure handler is registered before event is emitted:
// ✅ CORRECT: Register first
this.registerEventHandler({
eventType: 'test:completed',
handler: async (event) => { /* handle */ }
});
// Then emit
this.eventBus.emit('test:completed', data);
// ❌ INCORRECT: Register after emit
this.eventBus.emit('test:completed', data);
this.registerEventHandler({ ... }); // Too late
5. Memory Access Denied
Problem: AccessControlError: Read denied.
Solution: Ensure correct access level and agent IDs:
// ✅ CORRECT: Matching access levels
await memoryStore.store('data', value, {
owner: 'agent-1',
accessLevel: AccessLevel.SWARM
});
const data = await memoryStore.retrieve('data', {
agentId: 'agent-2',
swarmId: 'swarm-1' // Same swarm
});
// ❌ INCORRECT: Mismatched access
await memoryStore.store('data', value, {
owner: 'agent-1',
accessLevel: AccessLevel.PRIVATE
});
const data = await memoryStore.retrieve('data', {
agentId: 'agent-2' // Access denied
});
Debug Mode
Enable detailed logging for troubleshooting:
// Set environment variable
process.env.DEBUG = 'aqe:hooks,aqe:memory,aqe:events';
// Or in code
this.logger.level = 'debug';
